The 1st dimension of hair is the Cuticle. The cuticle is the most outer layer and is composed of shingles that overlap each other The function of these overlapping shingles is to protect the cortex. The cuticle is the protective barrier for the cortex and the medulla. Products with a high pH cause the cuticle to open and pull moisture out of the hair. Products with the proper pH will allow the cuticle to expand and breathe in a normal fashion, maintaining the necessary moisture within the hair.
The 2nd dimension of hair is the Cortex. It is composed of a fibrous protein core of elongated cells that are bonded tightly together. The cortex is responsible for giving the hair its strength, elasticity, and tenacity. It is responsible for the majority of the total weight of the hair. This is the layer of the hair where chemical changes take place when altering the hair color, permanent waving, or relaxing the hair.
The 3rd dimension of hair is KAP (keratin associated proteins). KAPs are located within the cells of the cortex and comprise the cements that surround the keratin fibers. The key benefit to this is to give the hair more elasticity and bounce.
The 4th dimension of hair is CAM (cell adhesive molecules). Moisture within the hair is a lubricant for the hair structure. Damaged hair loses moisture, which means you lose the lubricant that gives hair its ability to stretch. Without the stretch, you create breakage. CAM is the most important element related to stretch, applicability and more important, the ability for hair to breathe. It acts as a cushion and is protective to all cells within the hair structure.
Note: All chemical processes and the use of heat activating tools pull moisture from the hair and that is the reason why hair becomes dry and brittle.
The 5th dimension of hair is pH (potential hydrogen). pH is imperative not only for the hair structure but for the skin itself. The pH of the hair is acquired from the lubricant that is derived from oil glands mixed with skin cells, which creates a pH of 4.5-5.5. The pH of the hair is one of the most important aspects of retaining the health of the hair. Because of this, Cinque Science Labs™ has created the most scientific sophistication of different levels of pH to harmonize within and outside of the hair structure.
